Founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1889, Phoenix has grown from a small agricultural settlement into the largest capital city in the United States by population. Known as the “Valley of the Sun,” Phoenix sits on land once cultivated by the ancient Hohokam civilization, whose canals inspired the city’s early irrigation system — many of which still influence neighborhoods today.
Phoenix is unique in that it has both historic districts (like Willo, Encanto, and Roosevelt) showcasing 1920s–1940s bungalows and revival-style homes, as well as extensive mid-century ranch neighborhoods built during the post–World War II housing boom. Today, downtown Phoenix blends these historic roots with modern high-rises and urban condos, while surrounding areas offer desert estates with mountain views.
With over 300 days of sunshine per year, a metro population exceeding 4.9 million residents, and a real estate landscape that mirrors its layered history, Phoenix continues to stand out as one of the Southwest’s most dynamic housing markets.
